Ohio to replace I-71 Bridge - Omnipro Services selected to begin construction on aging structure

[7/8/10 - Roads & Bridges] The Ohio Department of Transportation chose Omnipro Services to replace the aging Jeremiah Morrow Bridge, located between Columbus, Ohio, and Cincinnati, with the $88 million set aside from its fiscal budget.

The I-71 Bridge, which serves 60,00 vehicles a day with two lanes going each way, is still safe but cannot support trucks over 120,000 lb, according to Associated Press reports. Onmipro will work on replacing the existing deck truss bridge with a concrete cast-in-place, segmental box structure using the balanced cantilever method of construction.

The bridge has undergone major rework since its inception in 1965 because of significant slope failures. According to Onmipro, the construction is complicated and demanding because of the bridge’s steep embankments and lack of roadway systems underneath. Construction is expected to be finished in four years and will not hinder traffic in either direction, a state official told the AP.

Canton firm consults on $88.1 million bridge project

Rep Article[7/26/10 - The Canton Repository] Omnipro Services, a Canton firm founded by Michael and Kathleen Swan 14 months ago, has been retained by the Ohio Department of Transportation as a third-party construction consultant on an $88.1 million bridge being rebuilt near Lebanon.

Michael Swan, a Plain Township native, is a professional engineer who spent a quarter of a century running large construction management divisions for international companies. Offices are at 1126 McKinley Ave. NW. Omnipro’s ODOT project in Warren County involves rebuilding the twin spans of the Jeremiah Morrow Bridge. The bridge, built in the 1960s, drew ODOT scrutiny following a 2007 Minnesota bridge collapse. That bridge was similar in design to the Morrow bridge. (Photo courtesy of The Repository.)
